One of the leading technology companies with more than 11K users working across continents
Overview.
Our client’s network extends over greater distances and across multiple carriers' networks and is facing operational challenges including network congestion, packet delay variation, packet loss, and even service outages. Besides, adoption of next-gen technologies as VoIP calling, videoconferencing, streaming media, virtualized applications, and desktops require low latency and is a challenge in current scenario. Our client’s bandwidth requirements are also increasing, especially for applications featuring high-definition video conference calls and it can be expensive and difficult to expand WAN capability, with corresponding difficulties related to network management and troubleshooting.
High customer link on-boarding time of 8-12 weeks High bandwidth upgrade lead time of 8 weeks for provisioning for a new project Traditional technology Bandwidth downgrade to optimize cost possible only at the end of the agreement period No application-based usage analytics are available Ad hoc year-on-year rate reduction Potential downtime of some services as no backup for some links Sub-optimal application performance of services operating from shared internet links Sub-optimal quality video conferencing experience owing to separate WAN clouds for India and other countries Poor collaboration user experience owing to the inability to cater for peak utilization periods, e.g. owing to multiple Skype calls Moderate data security
Solution.
In view of the requirement statements and the problem areas, Coforge decided to shift gears, reduce the technical debt, and future proof the client’s network environment by adopting the emerging technology of SD-WAN which will address stated problems but also give greater flexibility, agility, and integration with our client’s customer ecosystem.
The software-defined wide-area network (SD-WAN or SDWAN) is a specific application of software-defined networking (SDN) technology applied to WAN connections, and Coforge used it to connect our client’s enterprise networks – including branch offices and data centers – over large geographic distances.
The impact.
Via this transformation, we are able to reap multiple benefits by overcoming many existing constraints and challenges as listed below.

Moderate customer on-boarding time of 4-6 weeks
Moderate bandwidth upgrade lead time of 4 weeks for provisioning for a new project
State-of-the-art SD-WAN technology would be a talking point with prospects and customers
Bandwidth downgrade to optimize cost possible at any time enabling us to follow a location-wise consumption-based model
Application-based usage analytics would enable us to optimize bandwidth and cost
Committed year-on-year rate reduction over the contract period
High availability of services as all links would operate in the auto-failover configuration
Optimal application performance as all internet links would be of the premier category
Good quality video conferencing experience owing to a common mesh WAN architecture globally
Better collaboration user experience as peak utilization periods, e.g. owing to multiple Skype calls, would be catered for by the link burst-ability option
